Mangoes are falling on my head

I think I have 5 minutes to update you on the most intense two weeks of my life! Haiti is absolutely gorgeous, lush and tropical, green on top of green. Mangoes falling from above, as lovely as that sounds one almost knocked me out the other day. But amongst the beautiful island there is a world full of poverty, filth and neglect. The streets are not lined with sidewalks, but instead trash. People's homes consist of brick, a curtain for a door, and possibly a tin roof--maybe a little bigger than your pantry at home. But the people are beautiful-inside and out, and I'm blessed to have had this experience. Most of my time has been dedicated to our triage team, where we have conducted mobile clinics around the areas of Milo and Limbe. Almost over night we had to transition from the role of student nurse to real life nurse! We were assessing, diagnosing and prescribing medications--all with the help of a veteran nurse named Hope. She has been a huge asset and advisor, we are all incredibly thankful for her.

One of the highlights of this trip has been the bond with our translators. They are selfless and have true heart, genuinely wanting to help their community. They have provided our team with non-stop smiles and laughter. Saying goodbye to them will be bitter-sweet.

Also, I have a 7 year old Haitian boy who is officially my shadow. I plan on bringing him back to the states :).

I will update with details eventually--but thank you all for your support. I have truly found a heart for Haiti!

Almost There!

Estamos en el Dominican Republic and we leave tomorrow on a bus for Haiti! As excited as I am for Haiti, I'm sad to be leaving the DR so quickly. I want to continue my love hate relationship with Spanish--hate that I can never speak it correctly, but love being surrounded by the language and the people.

We have a solid team and I'm thankful to have the next few weeks to get to know them better. Big things are coming our way!

Thanks again for the amazing send off and I'll check in soon!

T minus how many hours???

Tomorrow is the big day, or wait I guess it's actually today! And the only word I have is "scramble". A year ago I was scrambling to find a place to live in Azusa, then I've been scrambling to keep up with the accelerated nursing program and now I'm scrambling to pull it together for Haiti. Once upon a time I considered myself an organized person, but lately I'm a hot mess.

Besides chaos, nursing school has provided me with a sense of purpose and for that I'm incredibly grateful. I'm still not sure what to expect from Haiti, but I go with an open heart and mind.

I will do my best to keep updates during the trip. But my guess is internet access will be limited, so please don't freak out Mom! :)

A huge thank you to all that have donated and to those who have provided support, prayer and encouragement-- THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I can't show my appreciation enough.

With that, big hugs and love!
